The 10-second clip, which we cannot confirm as authentic, depicts what appears to be some sort of calibration taking place. Part of that process involves an individual placing their finger on the back of a phone as if to test a Touch ID sensor.

During that process, a display above the device shows lines of data.

If the video turns out to be legit — and that's a big if — it would mean that Apple has not abandoned Touch ID after all and would be a huge surprise to most mobile experts.

This, of course, is not the first time we've heard rumors of a back-mounted Touch ID. However, these rumors typically turn out to be just that — rumors and not actual facts.

Only time will tell if this new video is some elaborate hoax, but if it is actually real, it means that Apple wasn't quite ready to dive headfirst into its so-called Pearl ID facial-recognition technology.

Luckily for Apple fans, they'll only have to wait a few more weeks to find out since most mobile experts believe the iPhone 8 launch will take place in early September. As always, we'll be following any big news as the launch event nears.
